The 6th Annual YappoPalooza Sea Turtle Festival, presented by H-E-B, makes its debut at the Gladys Porter Zoo on Saturday, June 11th 2016. Dedicated to the conservation of the Kemp’s ridley and other species of sea turtles, YappoPalooza honors the memory of Jeffrey “Yappo” Boruff, a dedicated volunteer for the Bi-National Kemp’s Ridley Conservation Project, of which the Gladys Porter Zoo is a part of. The sea turtle festival was previously held in San Marcos, Texas its first four years and was moved to South Padre Island last year. This year, the Gladys Porter Zoo will be hosting the festival. All proceeds raised from this event will directly benefit proven sea turtle conservation efforts.

YappoPalooza is a day-long celebration that aims to raise awareness for the world’s most endangered sea turtle, the Kemp’s Ridley. The project also hopes to raise the community’s awareness of the impact volunteerism can make.

YappoPalooza is divided into 3 separate events with something for everyone to enjoy.

The 1st Annual Ridley Rush will kick-off this year’s festival at 9:00 a.m. All ages are welcome to participate. The 1 Mile Walk/Run will have you scurrying through the beautiful and scenic Gladys Porter Zoo as you experience what a baby sea turtle must endure on its rush to the ocean.

The Ridley Rush leads directly into the next event, Yappo Kids Fest. Various activities will be located throughout the Zoo including arts and craft vendors, delicious Texas Gulf shrimp plates for sale, silent auction preview, educational exhibitors, and children’s activities such as rock climbing, face painting, a bouncy house, and more! Renowned sea turtle biologists from Mexico and the United States, the Zoo’s aquarists, and a Rancho Nuevo field biologist will give presentations throughout the duration of the event. Plus, get the chance to meet Shelldon, the Kemp’s Ridley Project Ambassador! Yappo Kids Fest is from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is free with the purchase of regular Zoo admission, membership, or Ridley Rush participation.

In the evening, wind down with YappoPalooza’s adult-oriented event, Yappo Bands and Brewskis. Each ticket will include craft beer sampling courtesy of L&F Distributors, Texas Gulf shrimp plate, a raffle ticket, live music from local bands and silent auction. The music highlighted at this event will be a Valley Music Showcase featuring various genres such as Alternative, Rock en Español, Hip Hop and Ska. Yappo Bands and Brewskis begins at 6:30 p.m. and lasts onward till midnight.
