Just north of Brownsville is a 45,000-acre preserve called Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. People come from all over the world just for a chance to get a glimpse of the endangered Ocelot and Jaguarundi. Other wildlife are easier to find such as alligators, armadillos, White-tailed deer, Texas tortoise and the White-colored peccary, known locally as the Javelina.

This area is the only wildlife refuge in the nation that has a record 400-plus bird species within its boundaries including the rare Aplomado falcon. The diverse terrain and quiet, picturesque lagunas look the same as they were hundreds of years ago.
