Brownsville Raid Exhibit @ Heritage Museum, Vezzetti Room
Feb 1 @ 10:00 AM – Mar 30 @ 4:00 PM
Brownsville Raid Exhibit @ Heritage Museum, Vezzetti Room

The Brownsville Raid was an historic event of racial injustice against the 167 Buffalo Soldiers of the 25th Infantry, on August 13, 1906. The 167 Buffalo Soldiers of the 25th Infantry stationed at the Fort Brown were accused of the murdered of a white bartender and a lengthy trial ensued. The matter reached President Theodore Roosevelt, who ultimately dishonorably  discharged the Buffalo Soldiers, even though proof of culpability had not been found. The Buffalo Soldiers were eventually pardoned and honorably discharged in 1972 by President Nixon. the exhibit will include maps, never before seen images of Army / civilian correspondence, military pardon addendum and more. Through the help of Congressman Vela’s office and special research access of the National Archives, we present this unique exhibit.

Bruce Guilden – Lectures back to back @ Brownsville Museum of Fine Art

Bruce Guilden - Lectures back to back @ Brownsville Museum of Fine Art

During this one day workshop legendary photographer Bruce Gilden will provide insight through interactive sessions and group discussions on shooting methods, individual style and editing tips. At this workshop Gilden will assist you in developing or expanding your style as a photographer. This workshop is open to both amateurs and professionals. This is a rare opportunity to learn from a living legend.

This workshop offers:
• Concepts of street photography
• Developing an eye
• Editing Tips

Please Submit Photographs to The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art for a chance to have them Critiqued by Gilden during the last hour of lecture.

Bruce Gilden:
An Iconic street photographer with a unique style, Bruce Gilden was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1946. He first went to Penn State University but he found his sociology courses too boring for his temperament and he quit college. Gilden briefly toyed with the idea of being an actor but in 1967, he decided to buy a camera and to become a photographer. Although he did attend some evening classes at the School of Visual Arts in New York, Bruce Gilden is to be considered substantially a self-taught photographer.
Right from childhood, he has always been fascinated by the life on the streets and the complicated and fascinating motion it involves, and this was the spark that inspired his first long-term personal projects, photographing in Coney Island and then during the Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
Over the years he has produced long and detailed photographic projects in New York, Haiti, France , Ireland, India, Russia, Japan, England and now in America.
Since the seventies his work has been exhibited in museum and art galleries all over the world and is part of many collections.
The photographic style of Bruce Gilden is defined by the dynamic accent of his pictures, his special graphic qualities, and his original and direct manner of shooting the faces of passers-by with a flash. Gilden’s powerful images in black and white and now in color have brought the Magnum photographer worldwide fame.
Gilden has received many awards and grants for his work, including National Endowments for the Arts fellowships (1980, 1984 and 1992), French “Villa Medicis Hors les Murs” grant (1995), grants from the New York State Foundation for the Arts ( 1979, 1992 and 2000), a Japan Foundation Artist Fellowship (1999) and in 2013 a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship.
Bruce Gilden has published 18 monographs of his work, among them: Facing New York, 1992; Bleus, 1994; Haiti, 1996 (European Publishers Award for Photography); After The Off, 1999; Go, 2000; Coney Island, 2002; A Beautiful Catastrophe, 2004; Foreclosures, 2013; A complete Examination of Middlesex, 2014. In 2015, Gilden published Face, and Hey Mister Throw Me Some Beads! His new book Un Nouveau Regard Sur la Mobilité Urbane featuring the commission he did for the French transportation system RATP was released in April 2016.
Bruce Gilden joined Magnum Photos in 1998. He lives in Beacon, New York.

Practicing the Future: Imagine and Rehearse the Future with Us @ Southern Pacific Linear Park & Historic Battlefield Trail

Join Las Imaginistas at Linear Park on Friday, March 22nd at 6:30 PM, for the next event of their Hacemos la Ciudad Project: Practicing the Future: Imagine and Rehearse the Future with Us.

From the park, the artists will bike to three sites throughout historic downtown Brownsville. At each location, there will be performances rehearsing a future version of art and equity in Brownsville, as envisioned by community members, artists, activists, educators, non-profit leaders, and city officials. Join us on the bike ride or just meet us at the performance sites!

The event includes choreography by Caty Wantland of the Camille Theatre and performances by multiple Dragtivists. “Practicing the Future” is produced in collaboration with Bici the City. The program is free and open to the public.

Hacemos La Ciudad is a yearlong effort by Las Imaginistas to collect input about the future of Brownsville from community members. The program will result in the creation of a Plan de Arte Cívico del Pueblo Entero (Civic Art Plan of All the People). The Plan will be presented to the public and the city in a community event on April 27th.
