Betul Soykan, violin @ TSC Arts Center | Brownsville | Texas | United States

Faculty violinist Betul Soykan performs one of Prokofiev’s darkest works, the Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in F minor, op. 80, two movements of which were played at the composer’s own funeral. Also included on the program is the Czech composer Bedrich Smetana’s singular Piano Trio in G minor, op. 15. This work – a milestone of romanticism – features dashing alternations between dark frenetic motion and lighter, folk-inspired melodies and variations. Rachmaninoff’s achingly beautiful “Romance” rounds out the virtuosic program. Dr. Soykan will be joined by cellist Katherine Decker and pianists Juan Pablo Andrade and Eric Jenkins…
