If you’re a Brownsville resident, chances are you’re aware of our plastic bag ordinance. In 2011, Brownsville became the first city in Texas to ban single-use plastic bags. The ordinance was an effort to encourage recycling and protect storm water infrastructure as well as wildlife and resacas. So far, it’s been a success, so much that other cities in Texas, like Ft. Stockton and Austin, have either enacted their own plastic bag bans or have contacted the City of Brownsville for advice on creating one.
Well, it’s not only other cities that have noticed. Recently, the City of Brownville’s plastic bag ordinance was recognized as a “Bright Idea” by the Ash Center of Democratic Governance and Innovation at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
