Twice the entertainment and double the excitement are brewing on Friday, April 13 on The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College campus, when the Signature Series welcomes two of the nation’s finest chamber ensembles in performances from “Sketches of Spain” and “Porgy and Bess.”
Grammy-nominated Imani Winds has been called “the nation’s leading wind ensemble” by New Yorker Magazine and has been praised by critics for a repertoire that skillfully bridges European, American, African and Latin American traditions.
Boston Brass is also well known for its wide selection of musical styles – classical, jazz, pop and more – in unique arrangements and what it likes to call a “friendly atmosphere.”
Together, they will recreate jazz legend Miles Davis’ and arranger Gil Evans’ landmark 1958-60 collaboration on two pivotal works in the world of jazz.
Dr. Dan Barnard, Director of The Arts Center, said Imani Winds and Boston Brass could have been Signature Series headliners on their own, making their joint appearance both a special treat for Brownsville audiences and “a very cool project.”
“Porgy and Bess” features selections from George Gershwin’s classic opera of the same name. “Sketches of Spain,” with its works by contemporary Spanish composers, adds a “Latin twist,” Barnard said.
“It’s just a very cool project that fits well with our overarching Signature Series philosophy of including performances to honor our region’s Latin roots,” Barnard said.
The performance is part of a two-day residency for the two groups, made possible with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. concert may be purchased online at utb.edu/artscenter or by calling 956-UTB-TKTS, 882-8587.
The Signature Series will present a special Cinco de Mayo concert with Del Castillo, The Brew and The Connectors at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 5 on the grounds of The Arts Center. Tickets are $30.
The Signature Series will soon unveil the third season and already announced is a performance of the Ballet Folklórico de México for Oct. 22.
