Blending musical styles and defying expectations, guitarist and singer Raul Midón will make his South Texas debut Friday, March 2, as part of The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College Signature Series.
In the midst of a 2011-12 world tour, Midón arrives on The Arts Center stage as a rising star, with three albums to his credit and a growing list of accolades for his diverse mix of Latin, jazz, soul and pop genres. His tour follows release of his third album, Synthesis, in 2010. Two previous solo albums, State of Mind in 2005 and World Within a World in 2007, also received critical acclaim.
Midón says his lyrics are about the world and his place in it, whether hopeful and uplifting, or bitingly insightful about betrayal, fear and the American Dream.
He was reviewed on National Public Radio as an artist “who contributes something lasting to the musical landscape,” and by Guitar Player as “one of those rare musical forces that remind us how strong and deep the connection between man and music can sometimes be.”
Dr. Dan Barnard, The Arts Center Director, said this year’s Signature Series lineup has a “Latin influence,” and Midón fits right in. “He is so hip and brings influences from flamenco to R&B, to jazz and pop,” Barnard said.
Born prematurely in a rural New Mexico hospital, Midón and his twin brother, Marco, were blinded as infants, after spending time in an incubator without adequate eye protection. His mother died when the twins were young, and Raul was inspired in his musical career by his father, an Argentine folkloric dancer with a love of music.
Barnard calls the New York-based Midón’s vocals and guitar playing “exceptional” and his life story “an inspiration.”
Tickets for the concert may be purchased online at utb.edu/artscenter or by calling 956-UTB-TKTS, 956-882-8587.
The Signature Series is celebrating its second season at The Arts Center. After a successful inaugural run, this year’s series promises both diversity and the same dedication to excellence that patrons have come to expect.
