Brownsville, Texas - March 2009- The Old City Cemetery Center, located in the Mitte Cultural District, is pleased to present the 1st Saturday Coffee and Culture at the Center Series each first Saturday of the month from 10 am to noon on Saturday, March 7, 2009. The series includes lectures, hands-on activities for children and a cup of coffee or tea for adults. March's series focuses on women and is held in honor of National Women's History Month. The program includes a lecture on "Women Enhancing the Arts in Our Community through Art, Poetry, and Writing"by Marsha Betancourt and Dr. Melba Lucio. The hands-on activity is a "Poetry and Writing Workshop " led byDr. Melba Lucio. Guests to the cemetery center will also enjoy the temporary exhibition In Loving Memory: Epitaphs from the Brownsville Historic City Cemetery.The exhibit is drawn from the BHA permanent collection and was donated to BHA three years ago by the Escareno family of Brownsville . The original epitaphs were typed on onion paper and were rescued from destruction by a Brownsville resident. The items were then purchased by the Escareno family and donated to BHA's permanent collection. The exhibit is sponsored by Gloria Layton Escareno. This program is free to the public. The Old City Cemetery Center offers free admission from Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. The Brownsville Historical Association manages the Old City Cemetery Center .
