KIDFISH is a youth outreach program dedicated to facilitating and educating a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts. Its main objective is to provide fishing and educational experience for children and families in our community. The event will be held Saturday, July 24 at the resaca adjacent to the Brownsville Events Center. The resaca will be stocked with adult catfish.
This is a fishing experience for youth 16 and under to enjoy! There are three age groups: 6 years and under; 7-11 years; and 12-16 years. Awards include First- through Third-Place trophies for each age group, and six catfish will be tagged for a prize. Registration will be held from 7:30-9 a.m., and the first 200 registrants will receive a FREE rod-and-reel combo and KIDFISH t-shirt. Loaner rod-and-reels will be provided to other participants. Fishing takes place from 9 a.m.-noon with awards soon after.
There will be MANY other activities in the Brownsville Event Center parking lot -- from diabetes/blood pressure screening to arts-and-crafts activities. Law enforcement officials will provide fingerprinting and info cards, and McGruff will pay a visit! Activities are being added weekly. United Way of Southern Cameron County's Success By 6 will offer pre-literacy screenings (doesn't sound fun but it is!) and a Children's Book Club with celebrity reader! The Las Huellas Association was organized to serve as an advocate for the benefit of South Texas Wildlife and for the rights of South Texas wildlife managers, landowners and sportsman in educational and wildlife habitat-related arenas. Las Huellas is dedicated to educating all persons, especially the youth of South Texas, about the conservation, management, and enhancement of wildlife and wildlife habitat to ensure the preservation of our cherished resources for future generations. Other Sponsors include: Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department, GMS Architects, Valley Baptist Medical Center, Tu Salud Si Cuenta and Ernie's Fiesta Graphics. Sponsorship opportunities are still available!
