The Brownsville Historical Association invites the public to learn the art of Tarot reading on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Victorian Tarot Workshop. Beginning at 7:00pm, the workshop will give participants an introduction to tarot and its long history.
Lead by Kate Moore, a practicing tarot reader of sixteen years, the class will cover everything guests will need to know to learn to read the cards. The particular method that will be taught is commonly called the Victorian Method. This paricular method, a product of the Spiritualist movement, does not use the cards to predict the future or to help find fortune. It was used to communicate with the dead. Charles and Elizabeth Stillman would have lived during this movement and may have been friends with people who participated, especially since the Spiritualist movement was popular among the upper class.
The use of tarot was a popular part of the movement, as were Ouiji boards and mediums. The Spiritualist movement would eventually die out during the 1920s, but at its height there were over eight million practicioners.
The class will last approximately two hours and all students will receive a tarot deck to take home with them. This workshop is for 18 years and older only. The admission is $40.00 for non-members and $30.00 for members. Pre-registration is required for this class and seats are limited. Call Rhiannon Cizon at 541-5560 or email her at
