Ben Steele; POW A Collection Of Drawings And Painthings (11:00 AM)
The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art presents Ben Steele; POW a collection of drawings and paintings opening Memorial Day following the Silent March ending in Veterans’ Park. The exhibition will run from May 31 to July 10, 2010. The exhibition demonstrates the power of image and empowerment of Art. Ben Steele emerges from his POW experience by Michael Norman and Elizabeth Norman. From the California Literary review for Tears in the Darkness: The Bataan Death March and Its Aftermath: “The war was over. Ben Steele, held captive for one thousand,
had seen since the war was sitting in his classroom as a student. As he looked at the boy, Harry Koyama, with his almond eyes and yellow complexion, all the stored up hatred, bitterness, and devastation he had seethed within. He found out that the young man and his family had just been released from an American internment camp and assumed the boy hated him too. But reason prevailed. He invited Koyama to his office for a heart-to-heart talk. This cleared the air, and Harry Koyama became one if the best students in the class. Ben Steele’s long war was finally over.” By John R. Guthrie
Another Bataan Death March Survivor was Brownsville native Colonel Josiah W. Worthington. A collection of his poetry and letters home were complied into a book, Hell and Beyond by his daughter, Frances Worthington Lipe. The Colonel’s wife, Bernice Worthington was a founding member of the Brownsville Art League in 1935. This organization later became the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art celebrating its 75th Anniversary 1935-2010.
Playthings From The Past (9:00 AM)
The Brownsville Historical Association invites the children to discover the past with Playthings From the Past. This hour long program, occuring every Wednesday at 11:00am in July, uses paper dolls to teach participants about history and each week a new set of dolls and a new era of history will be featured.
Modern paper dolls are over 200 years old and were very popular in Victorian times. Using paper dolls as a teaching aide allows children to connect to the past in new ways. After the program, participants will be able to take their dolls home and create new adventures for them! The July schedule is as follows:
July 14: The 1890s - Known as the Guilded Age, the 1890s were a year of change and children will discover how people grew and changed during this exciting time!
July 21: The 1900s - It's a new century! The people who lived during this time saw their lives improve and the age of the childhood was born.
July 28: The 1920s - Welcome to the Roaring Twenties! It's all about the flappers, the mafia, and the Charleston!
Each class is $10.00 for non-members and $5.00 for members. This program has limited seating size, so pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, contact Rhiannon Cizon at 956-541-5560 or
